The ATCA is deeply saddened to learn that it has lost one of its finest players to the tragedy that is unfolding in South Asia following the earthquake/tsunami in the Indian Ocean.

The ATCA is deeply saddened to learn that it has lost one of its finest players to the tragedy that is unfolding in South Asia following the earthquake/tsunami in the Indian Ocean. Sujeewa (Sujee) Kamalasuriya was visiting Sri Lanka to spend time with his family and to develop links with his hometown school, Ananda College, Colombo (known for producing cricket greats such as Ranatunga and Attapathu). Sujee drowned after being hit by the tsunami whilst snorkeling last Sunday morning.

Sujee's cricketing background makes for impressive reading. He represented the Sri Lankan National Under 19 team and played against the likes of Mark Taylor, the Waugh twins and Craig McDermott. Sujee came to Adelaide in 1990 to study marketing and immediately fell in love with Australia. He joined the Adelaide High Old Scholars Cricket Club (Adelaide HOS) and commenced a highly successful cricketing career with the club.

Sujee's record speaks for itself. A gifted left-handed batsman, he opened the batting for the Adelaide HOS A-grade team and holds the club record for most runs scored and most centuries scored. He also proved to be handy with the ball and collected plenty of wickets with his spin bowling. Sujee played A-grade every season for Adelaide HOS except for this year when his business commitments compromised his ability to train regularly.

His close friends say that Sujee was an extremely hard-working, generous, warm hearted and humble person. (He was also completely sports-mad!) He forged a highly successful career in business and gave generously to both the Adelaide High Old Scholars and the Adelaide High School cricket program itself. He was an active member of the Friends of Sri Lankan Cricket and did much to assist in the promotion of the game of cricket in Sri Lanka.

There will be a service held in memory of Sujee next week and the Adelaide HOS Cricket Club extends an open invitation to all ATCA players/officials. The details are as follows:
Wednesday 5 January
11.00am
Adelaide High School Hall, West Terrace, Adelaide
Following the service, a celebratory wake will be held at the Flagstaff Hotel, Franklin Street, Adelaide (walking distance from the school) - all are welcome to attend.

Further details of the service will be published in Saturday's Advertiser. Certain charitable organisations will be listed in this notice and guests will be invited to make contributions to such organisations in lieu of flowers.

On behalf of all members, the ATCA extends its deepest sympathy to Sujeewa's family and friends at this terribly sad time.
